There are six native species of reptile in the UK, three snakes (smooth snake, grass snake and adder) and three lizards (common lizard, sand lizard and slow worm). All of which are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) against killing or injuring, with the rarer species further protected under the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017 against disturbance to their habitats.
Reptiles can be found in lots of different habitat including grassland, heathland, scrub and woodland.
Seven survey visits are required to see if there are snakes or lizards using your site, so timely involvement is key!
The team at Rocket Ecology hold survey license for all species of reptile, so can help with any surveys you may need for your site.
